Ravel assigned a solo role to the oboe in his orchestral version of “Le Tombeau de Couperin”. Its sound is highly characteristic of the work, although the original was written only for solo piano.
As an oboist, this state of affairs inspired me to make an arrangement that combines the essential features of both of the composer’s versions in one – the intimate character of the piano original and the tone-colour of the oboe in the orchestral transcription. A compromise was found between the two versions not only with respect to the compositional material, but also with regard to articulation and dynamics. Advice from the pianist Ai Yamamura, together with Ravel’s piano version, informed the writing of the piano part. Only in the case of the Forlane did I favour an accompaniment based on the orchestral version. This version essentially also served as the basis for the oboe part, in terms of its phrasing and other performance directions.
I shall be pleased if musicians find as much enjoyment in performing this arrangement as I did in preparing it.
